Abstract

This study aims to describe the affixation process and the types of affixes in the TanaRighuDialect spoken in the Lokory area, and to analyze them using a traditional morpheme-based morphological theory approach. The research is descriptive and qualitative in nature, utilizing primary data obtained through direct speech from native speakers in the form of monologues (such as folktales and life experiences) as well as daily conversations. Data collection techniques included audio recording, photography, and a linguistic ethnographic approach. The results of the study reveal three main types of prefixes in this dialect. First, the causative prefix pa-, which functions to form causative verbs, as in pa-ndua‘repair’ and pa-tekki‘said’. Second, the reciprocal prefix pa-, which conveys a mutual or simultaneous meaning, as in pa-nga’a‘food’ and pa-dho’do‘to descend’. Third, the anti-causative prefix ma-, which often forms intransitive verbs, such as ma-pede‘to choose’ and ma-wewara‘to spread’. Although affixation is present, the study also found a dominance of clitic usage in the TanaRighu language, as seen in the phrase Ku-wewara-di winiwatara. This finding indicates that the morphology of TanaRighu features unique characteristics that distinguish it from many other Austronesian languages. Nevertheless, the morpheme-based morphological framework remains effective in explaining and analyzing the affixation processes of the three prefixes, demonstrating its relevance in the morphological description of complex regional languages. This study makes a significant contribution to the linguistic understanding of the languages spoken in Sumba.
