Abstract

This study describes the numeral system of the Rikou dialect of the Rote language, focusing on the structure, function, and linguistic characteristics of cardinal numerals, ordinal numerals, and numeral classifiers. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, elicitation, and observation involving five native speakers of the Rikou dialect. The findings reveal that Rikou employs a transparent decimal (base-ten) numeral system characterized by analytic structure and morphological simplicity. Cardinal numerals function as independent lexical items that precede nouns without plural marking, while ordinal numerals are derived through prefixation primarily using na- and ma- to indicate order or sequence. The study also shows that the Rikou dialect does not possess an obligatory grammatical classifier system. Instead, speakers use optional semantic classifiers and measurement terms such as be’e (animal), helang (round object), ka’e (long object), liter, kilo, botol, and karung to specify animacy, shape, or quantity. Some nouns exhibit dual countability, functioning as either count or mass nouns depending on context. Overall, the Rikou numeral system reflects the analytic typology of Austronesian languages and demonstrates how grammatical structure is intertwined with cultural conceptualization of quantity, order, and classification. The documentation provided in this study contributes to the preservation of the Rikou dialect, which remains understudied and is increasingly vulnerable due to language shift.
