Abstract
This study investigates orthographic inconsistencies in the Amanatun language and their implications for language learning. The focus of this research is on the representation of four main linguistic elements, namely clitics, long vowels, possessive forms, and negation, as found in two major written sources of Amanatun, namely publications issued by the Unit Bahasa dan Budaya (UBB) and the Indonesian Bible Society (Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia, LAI). This study aims to describe the representation of these linguistic elements in the existing orthographies, to identify forms of inconsistency between the two publications, and to analyze the implications of orthographic transparency for language learnability. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The data were obtained through document analysis of written texts, particularly the Gospel of Mark chapters 1 to 5 published by UBB and LAI, and were supported by observation and interviews with native speakers of Amanatun from various age groups. The data were analyzed by comparing orthographic representations in the written texts with the pronunciations produced by the informants in order to examine the correspondence between written and spoken language. The results of the study indicate the presence of significant orthographic inconsistencies between the UBB and LAI publications. UBB consistently represents clitics, long vowels, and possessive forms in accordance with the phonological realization and grammatical structure of the Amanatun language, resulting in a higher level of orthographic transparency. In contrast, LAI demonstrates variation in the placement and omission of clitics, does not mark vowel length orthographically, and represents possessive forms inconsistently. Meanwhile, the representation of negation is relatively consistent in both publications. These inconsistencies affect the clarity of grammatical representation and have the potential to create difficulties for learners in reading and understanding Amanatun texts. This study concludes that orthographic transparency plays an important role in supporting language learning and literacy development. Consistent orthographic practices that are grounded in the linguistic structure of the language can facilitate learners’ phonological and morphological understanding, whereas inconsistent representations may hinder the process of language acquisition. This study is expected to contribute to orthographic development, language documentation, and efforts toward the preservation of the Amanatun language, particularly in the contexts of education and religious text translation
