Abstract
This study examines the phonological processes of deletion and lenition in the adaptation of Indonesian loanwords into Kupang Malay, focusing on: (1) how deletion and lenition occur, and (2) how these processes contribute to the integration of loanwords into Kupang Malay’s phonological system. Using a descriptive qualitative method, Indonesian data were collected from textbooks and the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI), while Kupang Malay data were obtained through interviews with native speakers in RW 05, Fontein Subdistrict, Kota Raja District, representing both younger (18–29) and older (30+) age groups. The findings show that deletion often involves the loss of unstressed vowels, initial glottal consonants, and final consonants (e.g., ame from ‘ambil’, deng from ‘dengan’), while lenition typically weakens consonants, such as /t/ becoming a glottal stop or /h/ becoming silent (e.g., angkaʔ from ‘angkat’, kasi from ‘kasih’). These processes systematically adjust Indonesian forms to Kupang Malay phonotactics, facilitating articulatory ease and speech fluency. By conforming to Kupang Malay’s preferred sound patterns, deletion and lenition ensure that loanwords are naturally integrated while maintaining recognizability, reflecting both structural adaptation and the preservation of linguistic identity.
