Abstract

This study was done because many VII grade students still have trouble understanding and using the simple present tense correctly in English. The research questions this study looked at were: (1) To what extent do seventh grade students at SMP N 20 Kupang understand the Simple Present Tense? (2) What factors contribute to the student’s ability in understanding the simple present tense? The goal of this research was to look at the grammar mistakes students make when using the simple present tense and to find good ways to teac it. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, and data was collected through written tests (pre-test and post-test), documents, and watching students. The results showed that the most common mistakes were misformation (41.8%) and omission (34.4%). These mistakes happened because students didn't understand subject - verb agreement, their first language got in the way, and they didn't have enough practice in real situations. After using teaching methods that focused on errors and gave specific exercises, the number of mistakes decreased in the post-test. The study concluded that using a communicative approach that teaches in context helps students understand the simple present tense better. The study gave advice to teachers, students, schools, and future researchers to make grammar learning more effective.
