Abstract
This study aims to determine the perceptions of first grade teachers towards the use of Kupang Malay language in bilingual education classes. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with data analysis presented using in-depth interviews. This research was conducted at GMIT Manumuti Tarus Elementary School, Tarus Village, Kupang Tengah Sub-district, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. Researchers used descriptive qualitative methods to collect data taken from observations. The data taken in this study is the teacher's perception about the use of Kupang Malay language in the Bilingual Education class in the first grade of GMIT Tarus Manumuti Elementary School. The first teacher’s perception is focused on the teacher's acceptance of the use of Kupang Malay language in the classroom, and the second perception focuses on the teacher's understanding of teaching using Kupang Malay language in the classroom. And the third teacher perception is the evaluation of the teaching and learning process using Malay and standard Kupang Indonesian. The result shows that the teacher’s perception about acceptance she said that students will receive lessons and also understand better if they use their native language, namely Kupang Malay language rather than using standard of Indonesian. The second is understanding she said that the use of Kupang Malay language in class greatly affects students ability in the teaching process in class because students more quickly and are more active when using KUpang Malay language in class. The third teacher’s perception based on evaluation she said that the implementation of bilingual education in the classroom will be effective if the teachers has two language skills and also the availability of learning media using Kupang language also greatly affect the process of teaching and learning activities.
