Abstract
A thesis entitled “Semiotic Analysis of Willi in Traditional Marriage of The Wanokaka Community, West Sumba Regency” the writer found research problem, and research data sources. The research problems of this research are (1) what are the physical forms of willi in traditional marriages in the Wanokaka community, West Sumba regency? (2) What are the symbolic meanings of willi forms in traditional marriage in the Wanokaka community, west Sumba regency? The purposes of this research are: (1) to find out describe physical form of willi in traditional marriage in the Wanokaka community, West Sumba Regency, and (2) to find out the symbolic meanings of willi forms in traditional marriages in the Wanokaka community. The analysis is based on the theory Pierce’s about semiotic: The representament, the object, and the interpretant. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. Willi in traditional marriage in the Wanokaka community was the data source of this research. The writer used interviews, observation, and to collect the data. Based on the analysis writer found 12(twelve) of the willi forms and the symbolic meanings of willi in traditional marriages in the Wanokaka community. The were: katopu ‘machate’ as a symbol of opening the formal marriage process, ahu ‘dog’ is a symbol of a sign of agreement, Jara ‘horse’ as a symbol of female dowries, karabau ‘buffalo’ as a symbol of female's dowries, hamuli ommah rara ‘gold mamuli’ is a symbol of gratitude, nibbu dei ‘spears’ as symbols of preliminary sign, regi jakka rabbing ‘cloth and sarong’ as a symbol of opening, wawi ‘pigs’ as a symbol of willi replies, gadding ‘ivory’ as a symbol of nobility, Kabba manggu kayu ‘white flag cloth’ as a symbol of an umbrella, Jara kaleti ‘ridding horse’ as a symbol of vehicle, boala Kabba ‘storage’ as a symbol of place to storage. This research it can be conclude the stated that the forms of willi there are 12 (twelve) whit the symbolic meaning of willi in the traditional marriage in Wanokaka community west Sumba regensy. Based on the conclusion above, the writer has some suggestions: 1). For the Wanokaka community, the West Sumba regency, especially in Mamodu villages, must be preserved from generation to generation to maintain willi cultures' authenticity in traditional marriages. 2). for lecturers, this research is recommended as a source of teaching about culture and sociolinguistics. 3). for people in general, it is advisable to love their cultural heritage and continue to preserve it by maintaining, cleaning, and respecting the legacy that their ancestors inherited.
