Abstract

Slang is a type of language variation consisting of new words or phrases that are unofficial or non-standard used by various social groups in informal situations. The researcher investigates slang words used in Birds of Prey movie. The research consists of two research problem as follow: 1) what are the types of slang words used in the movie “Birds of Prey”?, 2) what are the functions of slang words used in the movie “Birds of Prey”?. The aims of this research are to answer the problems that exist in this study using the theory by Allan and Burridge (2006) about types and function of slang. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method to describe the result. The researcher used documentation and note-taking technique to collect the data. The researcher found that there are five types of slang words used in this movie which are fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping. Fresh and creative was the most common types that found in the movie, there are thirty words that categorized into fresh and creative type. The researcher also found six different function of slang word that used in Birds of Prey movie. They are to address, to humiliate, to initiate relax conversation, to impress impression to reveal anger, and to show intimacy. By knowing the function of slang, the writer concludes that the use of slang can create relaxed conversation with people who have close relationships with each other. But, it can also bring bad effects in certain circumstances and situations.
