Abstract

The title of this research is "A Study of Figurative Speech in Natoni in Uab Meto used in welcoming guests in Fatuleu District, Kupang Regency" The problem of this research is "What are the figurative speech in Natoni? The study aims to identify and analyze the types of figurative speech of natoni in the Uab Meto language used in welcoming guests in Oebola village in the Kupang regency. The writer analyzed the figurative speech in Natoni using the descriptive qualitative method. The recording is used to gain the data. There are two informants (Thobias Tanone and Naaman Bees) for obtaining data and they are the narrator of Natoni. The analysis is focused on the characteristic of figurative speech in poetry as stated by Kennedy (1991) and Roberts (1995) that words and expression have a particular pattern or form, there are metaphor, simile, paradox, anaphora, apostrophe, synecdoche metonymy, personification and symbol. In Natoni the writer just found ⁽1⁾simile, ⁽2⁾anaphora, ⁽3⁾metonymy, ⁽4⁾synecdoche, ⁽5⁾personification and ⁽6⁾symbol. In a simile, they used nak “like” to compare the object directly. Word Ne is always used in every last sentence to clarify the meaning it is represented in anaphora. The word leku ma tabuhas the same meaning "time" which is always used in metonymy. The sentenceho paham ho nifu"your continent, your ocean, your area" used personification and synecdoche because they used abstract things to describe the character of humans. The results of this study are expected to provide valuable information or knowledge to readers to find out about the types of figurative speech that exist in Natoni Uab Meto. This article can provide a little awareness to the younger generation, especially Dawan, to protect and preserve local culture, such as welcoming guests.
