Abstract
This study entitled “An Analysis of Metaphor in Selected Poems ‘Kita Pernah Saling Mencinta’ written by Felix K. Nesi”. This research analyzed the types of metaphor and the meaning of metaphor. The aims of this research are to find out the types and meaning of metaphor on poems ‘Kita Pernah Saling Mencinta’. Qualitative method were used to collect and identify the data. This research data were metaphorical words or lines of a purposive sampling 20 of the 105 poems contained. Documentary analysis is used as method to take the data by reading, finding and analyzing types and meaning of metaphor contained in each title of poem. There were four steps in collecting the data of this research, they are; identification, classification, interpretation and analyzing. The results of this research were four types of metaphor found in Felix K Nesi poems, they are; Antropomorphic metaphor such as buaya di sawah ‘crocodile in a rice field’, Synesthetic metaphor such as kelana ‘wenderer’; Concrete to abstract metaphor such as di luar jendela ‘outside the window’; and Animal metaphor such as nisan di sabana ‘gravestone in the savana’. Moreover there are five meanings of metaphor used in the poem. There are lexical meaning such as buaya di sawah ‘crocodile in a rice field’; conotative meaning such as hujan 2 ‘rain 2’; Referential Meaning such as sungai malam hari ‘river at night’; gramatical meaning such as mencuri batang pisang ‘stealing banana stems’, and contextual meaning such as bulir jagung ‘corn kernels’. Finally, it is hoped that this research will be benefit for the readers especially to the students who are interested in analyzing the same literary work in English Department of Teacher Training and Education, Artha Wacana Christian University.
