Abstract

The research is conducted to answer two questions : 1.what strategies are applied by English teachers to teach English at SMP N 1 Kupang? 2. Are there obstacles when teacher use these strategies in online learning? The subject of this study is one teacher. The aims of this research are to find out the strategies applied by English teacher to teach English at SMP N 1 and obstacles in using these strategies. This is qualitative research, this research includes data analysis. Data collection is done by answering a questionnaire. The results of the study show that there are 5 strategies used by teacher at SMP N 1 Kupang in teaching during a pandemic, namely (1)Creating a two-way communication relationship among students and teachers, (2)Prepare learning materials that are short, clear, easy to understand, and interesting, (3)Choose learning media that is simple and attractive, (4) Planning some inline quizzes at the end of the lesson, (5)Conducting regular and continuous evaluations. In the use of various strategies, there are obstacles faced by teachers during the learning process are including unavailable internet quota and unavailable networks.
