Abstract

This research is entitled "A Discourse Analysis of Hate Speech on Whatsapp Group by the Students of Artha Wacana Christian University" The author formulates two research questions, namely: (1) what are the hate speech used on whatsapp group? and (2) Are the hate speech found in whatsapp group can be defined as hate speech according to the context?. This study aims to find out there are any hate speech used in whatsapp group and to know that the hate speech found in whatsapp group can be defined as hate speech according to the context. Data was taken from Whatsapp group “English 2015”, then the authors copied and analysed the data using a qualitative descriptive methods in conducting this research. The result of this research are, the writer found 12 hate speech used in Whatsapp group, these hate speech has different meaning according to the linguistic context, physical context and cultural context. After analyze these 12 hate speech to Cultural context, the writer found out that 9 words meaning can be acceptable as joke or regular words and 3 of them can be defined as hate speech.
