Abstract

This thesis is entitled "A Descriptive Study On Students' Passiveness To Online English Learning During The COVID-19 Pandemic In 9th Grade Students Of SMP Negeri 14 Kupang In Academic Year 2021/2022." This study was conducted to answer the question: what are the factors that cause student passivity and the efforts made by teachers in the online learning process for students during the COVID-19 pandemic? The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors causing student passivity and the efforts made by the teacher. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method and data collection using direct interviews. Data analysis was carried out through copying interview data from respondents into written data, identifying and grouping data based on factors causing student passivity and the efforts made by teachers in online learning. The results showed that there were several factors 1) Technological factors: internet, study apps, device and enthusiasm lesson 2) lack of motivation: passion of work, appreciation, and teaching method 3) Innovation: attention, creativity, critical thinking, and interaction. Efforts include: 1) Technology: internet, study apps, electricity. 2) Motivation: eager to learn, attention, sorounding environment. 3) Innovation: Creativity, in the form of games, time. In online learning, there are several factors that greatly influence the passivity of students at SMP Negeri 14 Kupang, it was found that students experienced problems with these factors when online learning, judging from the factors that affect students passivity, teachers have efforts to overcome problems. School are expected to be more supportive.
